Main Salmon River Rafting Overview
Salmon River rafting trips on the Main Fork of the
Salmon River run through the heart of the "The River of No Return" Wilderness
Area; the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Broad, white sandy
beaches, roller coaster & rock garden style rapids, emerald waters, hot
springs and dramatic scenery combine to make a Salmon River rafting trip a true
classic whitewater rafting adventure.
Destination Wilderness as a
booking agent proudly offers Salmon River whitewater rafting journeys through
Idaho outfitter River Time Guide Service. River Time Guide Service is owned by
Terry Hughes a former trip leader and guide for Destination Wilderness and
operated by Terry and his guides who for years have led trips on the Salmon
River.
On a Salmon River rafting trip you'll visit old ranch
sites from the days of yore and get a glimpse of what life in the river canyon
was like a few hundred years ago. Wildlife viewing opportunities come often as
moose and Bighorn sheep frequent the rivers edge to drink. The Main Fork of the
Salmon River flows through one of the deepest river canyons in the world. A
whitewater rafting trip on the Salmon River is an unparalleled setting for a
wilderness journey through the Idaho Rocky Mountains.
River Time Guide Service has a whitewater rafting trip
on the Salmon River trip perfect for just about anyone. They provide a variety
of multi-day Salmon River rafting trip
options with choices including both camp
and lodge trips ranging from four to six days in length. They invite you
and your family and friends to join them for a legendary Main Salmon River
rafting trip. Note: The below itinerary describes a camp trip. For
lodge trips, they pull ashore near the lodge, walk a short distance and then
enjoy creature comforts in the wilderness until they shove off the following
morning.

Day
One:
The shuttle bus departs the Salmon airport the DAY
BEFORE YOUR TRIP LAUNCH DATE at 1:00 pm. You then travel 2.5 hours to the
Salmon River Lodge. After overnighting at the Salmon River Lodge you will head
across river next morning to the Corn Creek boat launch area. Here, RTGS guides
will rig your personal bags on to the gear rafts, you will participate in a
thorough instructional and safety presentation and head off down the Salmon
River for some whitewater excitement! The first day on the river they encounter
several exciting rapids such as Killum and Gunbarrel. These rapids feature
smaller roller coaster waves that are fun and help get everyone comfortable
with the rapids and ready for more whitewater action. They stop for
lunch in the early afternoon and reach camp later in the day. This is when the
tents and sleeping pads are distributed and the guides help you set up your
personal camping gear. They will also set up and explain the "bathroom" system.
Happy hour snacks and beverages lead the way into a night of great food,
campfires, camaraderie, star gazing and more.
Subsequent
Days
(The number of days varies according to your selected
trip option): Each day on a Salmon River rafting trip follows a similar
routine although no two days are alike. Breakfast, a multi-course affair with
hot cowboy coffee, is served as the sun creeps into the canyon. After breaking
camp and loading the rafts they run bigger rapids and float enchanting calms.
Depending on the day, they may visit Native American pictographs, sit in
natural hot spring pools, visit Buckskin Bill's compound and run rapids such as
Elkhorn, Bailey Falls, Chittam and Salmon Falls.
The Salmon River
canyon is blessed with myriad things for rafters to see and do and they take in
as much as humanly possible! Each day lunch is set up early in the afternoon
and designed to fuel your system with a gourmet deli-style spread. In the late
afternoon they set up camp in a beautiful and secluded wild place, either on a
spectacular white sand beach or a tranquil forest glade. The early evening
hours provide time to fish, hike, read a book, enjoy happy hour snacks and
beverages, or take a nap. Dinner, in all its glory, is presented each evening
with style and flair. You will eat to your stomach's content, meals labeled as
the "finest outdoor cuisine imaginable." Each night a campfire will warm your
toes and the sound of the river will lull you to sleep.
Final
Day:
After another tasty Salmon River breakfast they break
camp, rig the rafts, and head through some more great rapids and inspiring
calms. Lunch is served just a short distance above the take-out point.
Depending on trip style you may fly out of the canyon to McCall, Salmon, or
Boise, or your shuttle vehicle meets them at take-out in the early afternoon.
Here, you say good-bye to the river and head to the town of McCall, Idaho,
which is approximately 1.5 hours from take-out. Once in McCall, you are taken
to your hotel or the airport, depending on your post-trip schedule. Those who
stay the night in McCall often gather with the guides at a local restaurant for
a celebration dinner to salute a great river and an exceptional journey!
Itinerary Changes:
While they do everything possible to follow the daily
