The Big Island of Hawaii is well known for its sandy beaches and resorts but there is another, more beautiful side to this tropical island. Our journeys to Undiscovered Hawaii offer spectacular nature adventures to those willing to escape the beaten path.

Undiscovered Hawaii features classic Hawaii hiking through lush, remote rain forests and Volcanoes National Park's lunar landscapes of black lava fields and warm water, wildlife-rich Hawaii sea kayaking in protected tropical waters.

Trip Overview

The Undiscovered Hawaii adventure begins with a series of Hawaii hiking day tours through Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park, one of nature's greatest works-in-progress. The park and its environs are a geological wonderland that showcases the forces that created our planet. Live, steaming volcanoes, moonscape panoramas of freshly solidified lava, and miles and miles of solitude far from the crowds of Waikiki (or Wacky-Wacky as the local wags call it!). The stark beauty of the Kau Desert forms a striking contrast with verdant forests of Koa trees and giant hapu ferns. An astounding variety of microclimates and forest communities scattered between sea level and fourteen thousand feet make this park a birder's paradise!

Each night during this portion of the trip we return to the comfortable and convenient confines of a small, friendly and locally-owned and operated vacation homes near the Park. Set away from the burgeoning beach side crowds, this place is truly a quiet, back of nowhere getaway. We are able to simply unwind in the island highlands and breathe in all the relaxing potions found in early evening tradewinds.

After the series of Hawaii hiking tours and sampling the park's variety of environments, we take advantage of the calm ocean waters that define the Kona Coast to enjoy more hiking, snorkeling, and Hawaii sea kayaking among the less-developed beaches and coves of the Big Island. (Kona is a native Hawaiian word meaning 'protected from the winds') We paddle along the central part of the Kona coast, an area known for sealife-rich waters and secluded beaches, and rugged lava escarpments. Here, we take time to snorkel, explore rocky headlands, paddle with dolphins and humpbacks, or just relax in a place that winter never seems to reach.

We overnight here in another vacation home in an idyllic tropical setting, under the sway of palm trees rustled by warm trade winds. So, if you are looking for a winter getaway that will quench your adventure thirst, highlight some of the world's most spectacular nature, and warm you from head to toe, we invite you to come bask in the glow of natural, Undiscovered Hawaii!
