This
journey is eight days long and offered mainly during the prime whale watching
season. Each trip features private flights between San Diego and Guerrero Negro
and Bahia de Los Angeles. We spend a full day and half at world-famous
Scammon's Lagoon watching the amazing grey whales. The sea kayaking is
spectacular and relatively mild, going with the wind along the coastal nooks
and crannies of the Sea of Cortez. Also featured are a variety of other
recreation opportunities such as hiking, snorkeling, and bird
watching.
Trip Overview We leave from San Diego
and arrive in Guerrero Negro, a small Pacific coast town that has grown to meet
the needs of avid whale watchers. That same afternoon we will head out to
Scammon's Lagoon (also known locally as Laguna de Ojo Liebre) for whale
watching, then spend the night at a comfortable bed and breakfast in Guerrero
Negro. The next day we will spend a full day at the Lagoon experiencing the
magnificence of the Grey whales in their natural habitat. On the third day we
will drive to Montevideo, an arroyo oasis in the desert. Here we will hike
among rare desert vegetation and explore the many cave and wall paintings left
by ancient inhabitants. We spend the night here in the desert in decadent
camping style.
The next day we continue
overland on to Bahia de Los Angeles, a sleepy sea shore town with the
immeasurable charm of a place that prides itself on a mellow way of life. After
arriving in Bahia we explore the exceptional museum and head to Camp Gecko, a
friendly and comfortable camp area located on a secluded beach south of
town.
At Camp Gecko we prepare our gear and kayaks, participate in a
thorough instructional and safety presentation, then spend the evening relaxing
on the sea shore and indulging in a delicious dinner. The next day we get in
our kayaks and paddle south, setting off for three days and three nights of
solitude and adventure. Our camp gear is transported by panga (an oversized
motorized skiff). As we paddle south, which is typically with the wind, our
naturalist guides offer insights into the culture, flora and fauna of the
region. We travel near the coast, paddling under the shadow of towering coastal
mountains, passing the craggy shores of a sea lion rookery island, drifting
into an isolated fishing village, and more. We may encounter many of the
various marine mammals that call these waters home, such as whale, sea lion,
and dolphin. Each night we make camp on a isolated beach and drift off to sleep
with the sound of the Sea of Cortez lapping against the shore.
On the eighth day we are
shuttled by panga back to Bahia de Los Angeles for a fresh shower, ice cold
beverages, and celebration lunch before we board the flight back to San Diego
to ponder our memories of the Baja.
